If you’re planning to take the PTE Academic exam for your study or immigration goals, there’s some important news for you. Starting 7th August 2025, the PTE exam format is getting updated with new tasks, longer duration, and some scoring changes.
In this blog, we’ve explained everything you need to know in a simple, easy-to-understand way so you can prepare with confidence.
From 7th August 2025, two brand-new speaking tasks will be added to the PTE exam:
You will hear a discussion between three people.
After listening, you’ll get two minutes to summarize what they discussed.
This task checks how well you understand and explain group conversations.
You’ll hear a situation or scenario.
You need to respond to it by speaking for 40 seconds.
This checks your real-life speaking and quick-thinking skills.
The new changes will increase the test duration by around 15–20 minutes. This is because:
More questions will be added to some existing sections.
The two new speaking tasks take extra time.
Make sure to manage your time well during the test and practice longer mock exams.
Some popular tasks in the current PTE exam will now contribute to different modules:
Read Aloud → Now contributes only to Speaking (earlier it affected Reading too).
Answer Short Questions → Now contributes only to Listening.
This means each section will focus more on its core skills. So prepare accordingly!
If writing has been your weak area, it’s time to improve it!
The Summarize Written Text and Essay tasks will now have greater importance.
Your content quality and structure will play a big role in your scores.
Using templates is still allowed, but they must be relevant and not overused. Try to write your own responses with good vocabulary and clear structure.
The PTE exam is powered by AI, but now human checking will be used more often.
Tasks like:
Summarize Group Discussion
Summarize Spoken Text
…will be manually checked when the AI system detects confusion, poor clarity, or unusual answers. So make sure your speech is clear, natural, and accurate.
The new speaking tasks like ‘Summarize Group Discussion’ and ‘Repeat Sentence’ will influence your listening scores too.
This means your pronunciation, fluency, and listening skills must be strong together. Focus more on integrated task practice.
Due to:
New tasks
More detailed evaluation
Stricter scoring system
…students might feel the test is a bit more challenging. But don’t worry — with the right preparation, you can still score high.
Here are some simple preparation tips for the new format:
Practice summarizing conversations with 3 speakers (you can use YouTube discussions or podcasts).
Improve your writing structure — start using paragraph format and keep it simple but effective.
Record yourself responding to different situations to prepare for the “Respond to a Situation” task.
Focus on natural speech, avoid robotic tone.
Stay updated with mock tests and sample questions based on the new format.
Pearson has made these changes to make the test more realistic and fair. They want to test your actual communication skills — not just how well you use templates.
If you’re planning to go to countries like Australia, UK, Canada, or New Zealand, the new PTE exam will still be accepted — just be sure you’re preparing with the updated format in mind.
